Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is a special one because it’s the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

There is currently lots in the news around the topic of climate change, asking for us to make changes to the way we shop, we eat, we live. That is just a small part of the range of topics that the Earth Day campaign tries to bring awareness to.

We can all play our part in minimising the impact that we have on the Earth if we just put a little more thought into it. You don’t have to live a life totally devoid of anything shiny and new, anything wrapped in plastic, or anything that isn’t home grown in order to make your contribution. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. My opinion around this is that a little contribution of something is better than contributing nothing at all. This is a MASSIVE topic, that I can only skim the top off today, but hopefully it is food for thought for you.

“But this is a nutrition blog, what does this have to do with sustainability?” I hear you cry!

There are so many ways to contribute, not just on Earth Day but everyday.

Consider where your food comes from. Often using local farmers markets and greengrocers for example can ensure that your food is locally sourced, reducing transportation, reducing packaging, and supporting local workers.

Only buy what you need. It may sound obvious but have a look at your bin at the end of the day. Are you putting too much food on your plate and it’s wasted when you can’t eat it? Maybe you’ve bought too much fresh veg and it’s gone off so you are throwing it away. Again, using those local shops and markets means that you can buy just the quantities that you need. Or in the supermarket could you choose the loose fruit and vegetables rather than the prepackaged options? 

This will also help to reduce the plastic in your shopping trolley. I challenge you to unwrap all of your items when you get home from your next food shop and pile up all of the plastic. It’s quite shocking to see it there all together. When you look at the type of plastic you have there you might be surprised at how much of it is not recyclable.

Take a look at the labels and see which items you can send to the recycling bin and which will go to landfill. Find lots of lovely reusable shopping bags too. There’s no need for plastic bags any more when there are so many other options for carrying your shopping.

The dairy and meat industry uses chemicals in farming, production 

and packaging which, along with the chemicals emitted into the environment in those processes. Choosing a smaller but better cut of locally farmed, more organic meats will have a positive impact on the environment, and by default on your overall diet and health.

The Friends of the Earth has a great section on their website on the impact of food production on the environment. I encourage you to read it and find some ways to improve your choices.

With a little bit of thought you can make some small changes in your shopping and eating habits and contribute to a bigger issue being tackled by many. Happy Earth Day everyone. Let’s do what we can to keep our Earth beautiful, green, healthy and providing for us.
